There are few things on this planet worth more than diamonds, so how can this iPad be more expensive than one coated in them? As it turns out, pretty easily. Stuart Hughes just used bigger diamonds, incredibly rare stone, and dinosaur bones to make the most exclusive and ridiculous iPad ever.
The iPad 2 Gold History Edition is "Uniquely designed and crafted by Stuart Hughes." It features a solid 24ct gold backing and an Apple logo set with 12.5cts worth of diamonds, but the front is where the price gets steep. The frame of the device is made from the oldest rock in the world, ammolite, and is combined with shavings of a 65 million-year-old T-Rex thigh bone. Add a single-cut 8.5ct diamond surrounded by 12 smaller diamonds on a platinum inlay as the home button, and you have a masterpiece of excessive luxury.

Teenager's Design Inspired By Nature

Ever heard of the Fibonacci Sequence? Well this 13-year-old boy has, and he knows how to use it too. Aidan Dwyer was hiking in the Catskill Mountains and suddenly had a burst of inspiration regarding plant life and solar energy collection. He studied the patterns in which trees grew their leaves and then created a working prototype.
"I knew that branches and leaves collected sunlight for photosynthesis, so my next experiments investigated if the Fibonacci pattern helped," said Dwyer. "The tree design takes up less room than flat-panel arrays and works in spots that don’t have a full southern view." He also claims that this new tree-like design collects more sunlight in the shade, in winter, and during bad weather. His design is actually more compact than the standard version, so it would be great for urban areas.
So how well does this new design work? Dwyer's Fibonacci sequence solar panel stand improves efficiency by a whopping 50%! He has filed a provisional US patent and is obviously drawing interest from major players in the industry. This kid is going to be extremely rich.

 

Why Didn't Someone Think of This Before?

For those that are unfamiliar with the Fibonacci Sequence, or just forgot since learning it in high school, it is a series of numbers where the next number equals the total of the previous two. For example, the first 10 terms are 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, and 34. This sequence is often found in nature, and especially in plant life.
Supposedly, the brightest minds on earth are hard at work on solving the world's energy crisis. So someone please tell me why nobody thought to look at nature and try to replicate it? I suppose it does sometimes take the open mind of a child to see such a simple solution, but scientists have been working with solar panels for decades now so there's really no excuse.
The biggest reason why solar power hasn't taken over as our power source is because the cost is too high, but hopefully innovations like this could lead to a future where our cities are filled with Fibonacci solar panel trees.

For more than 200 years the US Coast Guard [USCG] has provided maritime safety, security, and stewardship.  The USCG is a branch of the United States Armed Forces with jurisdiction in both domestic and international waters, and its duties consist of homeland and non-homeland security missions.

USCG's Birth

USCG, then known as the Revenue Marine, officially started Aug. 4. 1790, when the first Congress authorized the construction of ten vessels to enforce federal tariff and trade laws, and to prevent smuggling.  The USCG was also ordered to restrain piracy as well.

 

Name Changes

The Revenue Marine was renamed as the Revenue Cutter Service, and in 1915 it joined with the US Lifesaving Service to create the Coast Guard.

Bisphenol A (BPA)

What is it? Bisphenol A, commonly known as BPA, is an organic compound found in plastics. It is considered a toxic substance in Canada, but in the United States, it can still be found in water bottles, baby bottles, medical and dental devices, toys and household electronics.

What will it do? BPA is an endocrine disruptor that can mimic the body's own hormones, leading to negative health effects.

What's the solution? To avoid the toxic substance, look for plastic products with 'BPA Free' written on the label, and try to stay away from canned foods, as BPA is found in them too.

 

Soy

With the popularity of vegan diets on the rise, dairy products are frowned upon more often. It's easy to turn to soy milk and other soy products as an alternative, but it's best to do so in moderation.
What is it? Soy contains phytoestrogens, a group of chemicals that mimic the hormone estrogen. Women need estrogen to regulate their menstrual cycles and have babies.
What will it do? Some experts are concerned that an excess of soy will stimulate the growth of estrogen-sensitive cancers since high exposures of estrogen over a woman's lifetime are linked with an increased risk for breast cancer.
What's the solution? Don't give up soy altogether, but keep some variety in your diet. Coconut, almond, hazelnut and hemp milk are all great alternatives, and can be found in your local grocery store.

What is it? The harmful effects of artificial sweeteners, like aspartame, sucralose and saccharin, are a great controversy in our society. Many argue that they are human carcinogens, causing bladder, colon, breast and prostate cancer, while others argue that there is no concrete evidence to prove this.
What will they do? While we are still uncertain if they are a cause of cancer, artificial sweeteners have been proven to cause headaches, depression and increased hunger.
What's the solution? To stay away from these complications, it's best to stick with natural sweeteners, like sugar, honey and agave. You're not going to gain weight if you eat sweets in moderation, and you may even feel better once you make the switch.

Oct. 7, 2011 -- Yemeni opposition leader Tawakul Karman, Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and Liberian activist Leymah Gbowee were awarded the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize today for their efforts in Yemen and Liberia.
Women in the Middle East, like the three recipients, are more socially active now [especially in the protests that have swept across the region], but conservatives have tried to keep them out of the spotlight. The Norwegian Nobel Committee chose to award these three leaders to cast light on women's rights in the Middle East. The committee described the prize as a call to women all over the world:
“We cannot achieve democracy and lasting peace in the world unless women obtain the same opportunities as men to influence developments at all levels of society."

Tawakul Karman

Tawakul Karman, born Feb. 7, 1979, in Mekhlaf, Ta'izz province, Yemen, is a journalist, politician, and human rights activist who co-founded Women Journalists Without Chains in 2005. She is known for her role in the protests for the freedom of press and her organized sit-ins and protests in Tahrir Square, the Arab Spring uprising, and the 2011 Yemeni uprisings.
Karman has been called the "Iron Woman" and "Mother of the Revolution" by Yemenis. She is the first Arab woman, the first Yemeni, and second Muslim to win a Nobel Prize.

 

Ellen Johnson Sirleaf

Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, born Oct. 29, 1938, in Monrovia, is the 24th and current president of Liberia. She has been in office since Jan. 16, 2006. Johnson Sirleaf secured an education in Monrovia and in the United States before returning to Liberia to work under the government of William Tolbert. She served as Assistant Minister of Finance and Minister of Finance under Tolbert's administration, but she fled the country after President Tolbert was assassinated and Master Sergeant Samuel Doe, a member of the indigenous Krahn ethnic group, took over the government.
She is known for speaking publicly against the Doe regime [and being imprisoned for it]; the executive order to make education free and obligatory for all elementary school-aged children; the Freedom of Information bill [like the US Sunshine Laws]; and her efforts in Liberia's debt relief. Johnson Sirleaf is the first [and only] woman to be elected to lead a country in Africa.

 

Leymah Gbowee

Leymah Gbowee, born 1972 in Liberia, is a peace activist in Africa known for her peaceful movement which ended the Second Liberian Civil War in 2003. After the end of the civil war, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf was elected president.
During the civil war, Gbowee worked with trauma victims, and she realized mothers had the power to bring change to the current terrorized society. In 2002 she organized Women of Liberia Mass Action for Peace, a peaceful movement aimed at ending the Second Liberian Civil War. Women, of Christian and Islamic faiths, sang, prayed, held peaceful nonviolent protests, and went on a sex strike. 
With the help of another activist, Comfort Freeman, Gbowee organized Women in Peacebuilding Network (WIPNET), and all the women in the peaceful protests were able to end the 14-year civil war in Liberia.

NIT-Warangal to become university with medical, law courses too 2012

Warangal (Andhra Pradesh), Sep 29 (IANS) After serving as a premier engineering school for 50 years, the National Institute of Technology (NIT)-Warangal is set to become a full-fledged university that will offer a host of courses, including medicine, law as well as postgraduate degrees in humanities and business economics.

'The aim is to become a university the way the human resource development (HRD) ministry has indicated,' Y.V. Rao, the institute's director, told IANS in an interview.

HRD Minister Kapil Sibal has expressed his intention to convert institutions like the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) into integrated universities that provide both medical and legal education among other courses.

While the IIMs and IITs have been cautious in their comment towards this proposal, NIT- Warangal is the first to announce its plans of transforming into a university to IANS.

'We will retain our original name (NIT-Warangal) but it will become an integrated university with both medical and legal education among other programmes beyond engineering and technology.

'We will also provide postgraduate courses in humanities, business economics, biotechnology and many others. The focus will gradually shift to from under-graduation to post-graduation and research,' Rao explained.

NIT Warangal is the first among the NITs. It was dedicated to the nation by the first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru way back in 1959. Then it was known a regional engineering college. The institute is older than many IITs, including IIT-Delhi.

Currently, India has 20 NITs and the union cabinet had earlier this month given the go ahead to set up 10 new NITs, including six in the northeastern states.

The director said the institute, which started its journey with a little over 100 students from a temporary campus, now boasts of 4,200 students. In 2006, the institute had 2,000 students of which 1,600 were pursuing B.Tech courses and the rest M.Tech.

'While all the central government institutes are implementing the OBC (Other Backward Classes) quota in three years, we did it at one go. With an increase in the number of seats, we have shifted our focus to post-graduation and research. Out of 4,200 students, currently 1,400 are M.Tech students and 300 are PhD scholars,' Rao added.

Like the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US, NIT-Warangal will become an integrated university and provide all kinds of courses to students to help the country move forward in the field of higher education, he said.

NIT-Warangal inks pacts with Finnish universities -2012

Hyderabad, May 21 (IANS) The National Institute of Technology (NIT)-Warangal has signed academic collaboration agreements with Finland's University of Tampere and Tampere University of Technology, an institute official said Thursday.

The pacts were signed last week in Finland, NIT-Warangal director Y.V. Rao said on his return from that country.

'These pacts allow for collaborations in systems, teaching methodologies, courses, content, hands-on learning, student exchange programmes and interaction with the industry,' Rao said.

NIT-W entered into a similar pact in February with ESIGELEC School of Engineering, Rouen, France, to promote research and academic exchange in automation and instrumentation and embedded systems.

NIT-W, which is celebrating its golden jubilee year, also has collaborative agreements with Bellfort Technical University of France, as well as Lawrence Technical University and Cincinnati University of the US.
